Hello Satellites' self-titled debut is, to put it simply, the nicest thing I have heard in weeks. It's the latest release from Melbourne's Two Bright Lakes label collective and continues their brilliant winning streak with Otouto, Seagull and recent Adelaide signings Collarbones. This here record is a studio collaboration between onetime solo artist Eva Popov, whose song 'First Day Of Summer' caught my ears in a big way once upon a time, and producer Nick Huggins, a man with a finger in most if not all Two Bright Lakes pies. While her solo work had a kind of warm, folky feel that accentuated the Waifs-yness of her voice, this album combines her rich but unassuming vocals and songwriting, still bursting with maturity and optimism, with the kind of rhythmic desolation that hit the mark so well with Kid Sam's record.
This was Radio Adelaide's feature album last week, and I've been letting it wash over me for days. I am unlikely to emerge from its waters any time soon. Okay that was lame, I apologise. But it's good, goshdarnit.
